Benefits of Grantmaker Membership

In addition to supporting and furthering MPC’s goals, members receive the following benefits.

Programs
MPC offers an array of programs where grantmakers come together to learn from each other, build grantmaking skills and expertise, keep informed about legal and financial issues, and hear about local and national grantmaking trends. MPC also brings together funders with shared interests such as corporate giving and family philanthropy.

Issue-Oriented Roundtables
MPC convenes members around a particular topic or a geographic area to share information. Eastern Maine Funders meet on a regular basis as do funders with an interest in health and a group with interests in the environment. Two Maine grantmakers recently announced funding for a language access project that grew out of an MPC meeting on diversity issues.

Networking
MPC’s Programs offer opportunities to meet others in the grantmaking community so you can connect a face with a name making it easier for you to call a colleague directly with a question.

One-on-One Consultations
MPC is available to help you establish or evaluate your priorities and overall grantmaking process, suggest local or national organizations or consultants to assist you or connect you with others grantmakers.

Services for Your Grantees
You can refer your grantees and applicants to our Web site and to the library for information about other funding sources. We also offer workshops on how to research and apply for grants.

Web-Based Resources
Members have access to members-only section of the MPC Web site.

Included is the Directory of Maine Grantmakers, MPC’s online, searchable database.  Through the directory, you can help grantees find other resources.  You can also identify other grantmakers who share your areas of interest.

Also included is the Family Philanthropy Online. A members-only series of monthly teleconferences and a searchable and continuously updated collection of more than 800 reports, family foundation profiles and sample policies vetted by the leading expert in this area, the National Center for Family Philanthropy.

Through our partnership with the Foundation Center, MPC is pleased to offer members access to Philanthropy In/Sight, an interactive mapping tool enabling users to visualize the spending patterns of private foundations and public charities through a familiar Google Map interface. With support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation for ongoing development and improvement, the Foundation Center is making In/Sight available to members of the Maine Philanthropy Center free of charge for one year, through the members’ area of its website.

E-Newsletter
Members receive MPC’s electronic newsletter, which keeps you informed of local and national news of interest to grantmakers. We will also send special alerts to members if the news warrants immediate attention. Recently, we updated members on Congressional actions that might affect charitable giving, reported on recent MPC programming and announced RFP’s.

Web Hosting
MPC will host your Website making it more efficient for you to make your grantmaking priorities and deadlines available.

Library Resources
Our library contains many resources for grantmakers. Whether you are establishing a foundation, revising your guidelines and priorities, or want to keep current with the latest operating practices and trends in philanthropy, our library has resources that will help you in the process. We have many of the Council on Foundations publications, including the popular annual Grantmakers Salary and Benefits Report.
