How Many Grantmakers Are In Maine?

There were 289 foundations active in Maine in 2005, up from 156 in 1994.  A review of the total grants recently awarded within the state showed that approximately 75% of them were from family or private foundations, 10% from corporate giving programs, 2% from operating foundations, and the remaining 13% from the Maine Community Foundation, including their donor advised funds.

How Much Do Maine Grantmakers Give?

Maine foundations and corporate giving programs gave grants totaling $92 million in 2004, up from $16 million in 1994. By comparison, individual Mainers gave an estimated $513 million in 2004, an increase of almost 5% from the previous year.






How Does Maine Giving Compare To U.S. Giving?

There were over 71,000 foundations in the U.S. in 2004, awarding over $36 billion in grants

  • Maine foundation giving represents less than 0.3% of national giving
  • Maine ranks 29th in foundation giving per capita

Maine Facts Worth Noting

Predominance of small foundations.  The top 20 foundations in Maine (nearly 80% of the total assets) award almost 70% of the total grantmaking dollars.  Most Maine grantmakers are small family foundations with no staff but strong ties to the state.

  Half of Maine’s top 20 foundations were created after 1995 and only one-fourth were established prior to1985.
